Prairie Keepers in Missoula, Montana is the ultimate grassroots movement for prairie stewardship in Missoula. Missoula is uniquely situated on on the interface of vast natural areas, with a network of public open space transitioning into National Forests and wilderness areas. We recognize our responsibility for these lands and the non-human communities they support. We work on prairie restoration and conservation in our public natural areas, and promote native plant gardening for decreased water consumption and increased wildlife benefit in truly urban areas.
Prairie Keepers provides public education and volunteer labor to address prairie restoration, including native plant gardening, through service learning. As we work to improve local natural areas, we learn from local experts on topics as broad as butterfly gardening and conservation to biological control of spotted knapweed.
Cooperation & coordination of volunteer stewards! Missoulians are an unusually active group of citizens! Folks of varying backgrounds and interests volunteer for the Missoula County Weed District, the Montana Natural History Center, and the University of Montana Natural Areas Restoration Program. What do we all have in common? A commitment to natural areas stewardship. Prairie Keepers provides an umbrella for all these sponsors to coordinate efforts to maximize our community's amazing resources. We hope you will get involved in any way that is meaningful to you- there are endless possibilities!
